FAQ

Where is the code in MONOCHROME?
On a slip of paper on top of a pale block in the basement corridors. The block is not tied to one memorized spot - it moves between runs, so treat it like a key and sweep for it.
Is the pale block always in the same place?
No fixed spot is documented. Recorded runs show the block in different rooms, and walkthroughs describe it as sitting somewhere in the maze rather than at a landmark - those specifics describe the builds checked before the October 16, 2026 update.
Can you find the code before collecting the keys?
Yes, and it costs nothing to read the digits early - the code stays the same within the run even after you die. The keypad just does nothing until the four keys have released the deadbolts.
What if you cannot find the pale block?
Re-walk the rooms you cleared for keys - the block is not tied to key spawns - and use opened drawers as markers so you never re-clear a room while the slip is still out there.
Does the code change if you die before entering it?
No. Within one playthrough the four-digit code stays the same even after deaths. Only a brand-new run generates a new code.

Where is the code in MONOCHROME?

On a slip of paper, on top of a pale block, somewhere in the basement corridors. That is the whole official geography: the game never marks the block, never highlights it, and never puts it in the same place twice. You will be walking past it while you hunt keys — the trick is to know what it looks like (a pale, lighter-colored block with a small paper slip resting on top) and to grab the digits the moment you see them, instead of planning to “come back later” and losing the room in the gray maze.

The September 12 AllThings. How walkthrough describes the same loop with screenshots, and recorded runs show different players finding the block in different rooms — which is the point, not a discrepancy.

One honesty note on timing: those sources predate the October 16, 2026 update, and the slip’s in-game behavior has not been re-verified against the current build. The strongest current signal that the mechanic stands is the official description itself — rechecked October 24, 2026, it still asks for four keys and one code, with nothing in the update’s visible listing changes (a seasonal rename and the description’s server line) suggesting the slip changed — but treat the block-level details on this page as describing the builds we checked, not a guarantee about today’s.

Why is there no fixed code location?

Because a fixed location would break the game’s core loop. The four-digit code is randomized per run, the four keys shuffle between dresser drawers per run, and the pale block moves with them — the game is designed as a search problem, not a memorization test. Walkthroughs that claim to pin the block to one room are describing one specific playthrough. The exclusion basis for “no fixed spot”: across every recorded run checked on this site, the block’s position differs, and the game’s own tutorial gives you a search instruction rather than a map.

How to find the slip fast

The sweep that finds keys finds the slip — the two live in the same search space, and the same habits speed up both:

HabitWhy it works for the code
Open every dresser drawer you passThe sweep is already walking the whole maze; the block sits in it
Leave opened drawers openThe prompt switches to Drawer Close — a marker that a room is cleared
Clear one wing of rooms at a timeStops you from criss-crossing the maze while the block waits in an unsearched wing
Read the digits the moment you spot the slipReading early is free; the number survives your deaths within the run
Split up in multiplayerOne player finding the slip is enough for the whole team

The drawer-side details are in the keys guide, the corridor layout — including why the maze is so easy to get lost in — is broken down in the map guide, and the codes landscape around this game (why no all-codes list can exist) is covered in the codes overview.

You have the digits — now what?

Enter them at the keypad on the wall beside the elevator in the spawn lobby, standing close enough for the prompt and pressing one digit at a time. Remember the order: the keypad does nothing until all four keys have released the deadbolts, so deliver keys first and code second. The exact entry routine is step by step in the keypad how-to guide, and the whole route from spawn to the Open Elevator button is assembled in the complete walkthrough.

We recheck this page after every update to the game — the homepage always reflects the current state of the escape route.
