How to Hide From the MONOCHROME Monster - Wardrobes & Lockers

Hiding is the only counter to the MONOCHROME monster: wardrobes in the base game, openable lockers on the Part 2 floor, and light-based detection after the rework.

FAQ

How do you hide from the monster in MONOCHROME?
Press E at a wooden wardrobe to climb inside, then stay still until the footsteps pass. The monster sometimes stops to stare into the closet - that stare is survivable if you do not bolt.
Can the monster open wardrobes in MONOCHROME?
No documented case exists of the monster opening a wardrobe or pulling a player out. The recorded danger is being caught in the open, and players who bolt at the stare are the ones who die.
What does crouching do in MONOCHROME Part 2?
Crouching reduces the noise you make. The Part 2 update reworked detection so the monster hears your movement - crouch when it is close and you are not already hidden.
How does monster detection work after Part 2?
Detection now factors in your lamp and the light falling on you, so shadowed corners and dark closets are the better cover. Sprint lasts longer to compensate for hiding being slightly harder.
What is the locker minigame in MONOCHROME Part 2?
If the monster catches you inside a locker on the new floor, you get a short minigame with a chance to slip away instead of dying instantly - a change from the base game, where contact kills.

Why hiding is the answer

Nothing in MONOCHROME lets you fight the monster — no weapon, no stun, no distraction item appears in any recorded run — so the design gives you exactly one counter: get out of its line of sight and stay there. The monster patrols the corridors on its own route and kills on contact, which means every encounter is winnable with one decision made early: know where your next closet is before you need it. Wooden wardrobes are scattered through the halls, and stepping into one is instant — press E next to it, climb inside, and wait.

How to hide in the base game: the wardrobe routine

The routine has four beats, and recorded runs show all four matter:

BeatWhat you doWhy
SpotNote the nearest wardrobe every time you enter a wingHiding fails when the closet is ten seconds the wrong way
EnterPress E at the wardrobe when footsteps or the ukulele-style cue startThe audio arrives before the monster does
HoldStay still, even if it stops and stares into the closet openingPlayers who bolt at the stare are the ones who get caught
ExitWait until the footsteps fully recede, then resumeThe patrol continues on its route — you are not being hunted

That stare beat is the one that kills beginners. The monster pausing in front of the closet is a scare, not a detection event — hold still and it walks away. One evidence caveat, stated plainly: recorded accounts differ on how safe that stare is (different players in the same recorded run describe opposite outcomes), so this site records it as survivable, not guaranteed — treat any movement you make inside the closet as a risk. The full behavior table, including what a catch costs, is in the monster guide.

How hiding changed with Part 2

The Part 2 update (launched October 2, 2026) reworked both sides of the hiding game, and the in-game update notes — read back in the captioned launch-window runs recorded October 3, 2026 — spell out the rules both runs confirm:

  • Crouching reduces your noise. Movement is now audible to the monster, so crouch when it is close and you are caught in the open.
  • Detection factors in light. The monster’s detection now weighs your lamp and the light falling on you — shadowed corners and dark closets are the better cover, and a lit hallway is a liability.
  • Sprint lasts longer. The movement buff exists specifically to compensate for hiding being “slightly harder”, per the update notes.
  • Lockers join wardrobes. The new floor’s hiding spots include openable lockers.
  • Getting caught inside a locker starts a minigame. Instead of an instant kill, you get a short chance to slip away — the base game’s wardrobe rule (stare and survive) plus an active escape stage.

The second recorded run below shows the locker minigame and the shove action mentioned in launch footage.

What hiding does not do

Three honest boundaries. Hiding does not pause the objective: the monster does not leave, so hiding in the wrong corner of the map still costs sweep time. It does not make you immune mid-interaction: most catches happen while players are opening drawers, so the first hiding rule is really “stop searching on the first footstep”. And it does not replace routing: never sprinting down long straight hallways where the monster has clear sight is what keeps you from needing the closet in the first place. The movement rules and the death costs are in the monster guide, and the new-floor survival context is on the Part 2 tracker.

Where hiding fits in the run

Hide early, sweep fast, deliver keys — the survival half only works when the search half is tight. The keys guide covers the drawer system that keeps trips short, the beginner guide sequences your first ten minutes, and the complete walkthrough assembles the whole route.

We recheck this page after every update to the game — the homepage always reflects the current state of the escape route.
